Many amateur photographers in this day and age ignore the mere suggestion of using black and white film for their photo work. These people do not realize what the professionals can achieve and that is the strength and unique nature that black and white film can lend to many photographs.
Black and white photos can create a stark, somber tone to the subject of the photo. It can lend a more simplistic touch to the photo itself and in the way it is composed. The effect can be quite dramatic depending on the subject of the photograph.

Black and white photos can also lend an air of romance, class, mystery or timelessness to what would otherwise be just ordinary photographs. Sometimes the most vibrant color photograph cannot do the same justice to a subject than a simple black and white one can. This can be especially true with some wedding photos.

With the right use of light and shadows, black and white photographs can evoke a stunning image. For this reason, to get the best effect the photographer must pay extra close attention to lighting details, textures and the basic elements of photography composition as seen through his viewfinder's frame. Without the distractions often presented by bright or contrasting colors in a photograph, other elements of the picture stand out in black and white photographs. To get these elements to work well in your photographs, you will have to take extra time with the fine details of lighting, texture and composition. If you do this, you may very well find that some of your best work will be that using simple black and white film.
