Strategies for the Young Working Photographer Looking to Break Into the Business

Photo District Online the website for the photographic community has launched a series of video seminars, available right from its website, designed to help new photographers break into the business. Assembling a panel of blue ribbon photographers, including Amy Lundeen, the photo editor at Budget Travel Magazine, and Fiona McDonagh, who is the Photo Director at Entertainment weekly, the group provides advice on a variety of topics relevant to photographers just starting out.
Arising out of a seminar given on March 10, the burning question of what does it take to launch a career as a professional photographer is answered from a variety of perspectives. How does one find their niche? How about marketing and promotion? How does one launch an effective website? These are just a few of the topics covered in this online video guide.
Unlike a lot of other hobbies that lend themselves to growth as a profession, photography tends to be a solitary hobby; just the photographer and his camera out on a sunny afternoon taking some shots. When that photographer decides he is ready to make the leap from amateur to professional, he is often left without the necessary contacts that he would have in other hobbyist pursuits. That is why PDN decided to embark on this project, as a way of mentoring new professionals and helping them make that leap from amateur to professional successfully.
