Sports Photography Fantasy Workshop

Ever wish you could learn to shoot professional sports from the big names? Ever wish your tutu ledge would include premium access to the games so that you can practice what you were learning?
Well, wish no more. If you have about four grand burning a hole in your back pocket, you can live out your fantasy with Jeff Snyder, a man with several photography-related distinctions under his belt. A sales contact at Penn Camera by profession, Jeff is also a partner and co-director of Washington Photo Workshops, an outfit that can put you and your camera in the heart of the action at professional baseball, hockey and basketball games, as well as at a host of thoroughbred horse races.

For your $4,000 you'll receive eight separate sessions, an introduction to digital photography and a digital workflow "know your gear" type class, a Washington Wizards game, a Washington Nationals game, a Washington Capitals game, an NCAA event at Georgetown University, a day of horseracing at Laurel Park in Laurel, Maryland, a lighting class and to wrap everything up, an edit/critique dinner. Classes are run concurrently and generally there will be two workshop students in and among the professional photographers at every event. There will also be two instructors assisting at the games, as well as teaching the various workshops and classes.

While there are no screening procedures for applicants, anyone who can afford the $4,000 fee is in, but Jeff advises that these workshops are pretty much only for serious photographers. He also encourages students to come "heavy," that is, laden down with some pretty high tech professional grade gear. While the workshop is certainly suitable for amateurs, it is only really intended for those who have already amassed a pretty good array of professional equipment. If you are interested in attending, Jeff encourages you to talk with him in advance to see what kind of equipment you may need. Since people who participate are generally of some means, acquiring the necessary gear is generally not a problem. There is also a limited amount of loan gear that may be available.
