Portfolio Presentation Pointers

Lots of attention has been paid to the mechanics of building a photograph portfolio, but little mention has been made of the presentation aspects and this is particularly sad because without being properly presented, the best portfolio won't receive the attention it deserves.
It goes without saying that your portfolio should be comprised of images that will appeal to a specific audience. There is nothing wrong with having one portfolio directed to multiple audiences, but if they have different interests then you really should have separate portfolios with the images directed towards the specific interests of each group.
Only your best work should ever be included in a portfolio. If you have a photo that you really like, but it is perhaps a bit blurry in a certain area, then don't use it, plain and simple. If you like the photograph, see if there is some way it can be salvaged, such as by re-shooting it or clearing it up with photo editing software if it is digital.
As far as presentation issues are concerned, the way you choose to present your portfolio can be approached from several different directions.
Some people send prospective clients to an online gallery, such as one hosted on their own website. Others provide the gallery on a CD that they will mail or give to potential clients. While these methods are great for secondary sales tools, the best way of presenting your portfolio is and always has been, with actual prints. The reason this method is preferable is simple, computer monitors distort color and different monitors will display photos differently. You are always better served by providing actual prints of your work in order to give potential clients a more realistic presentation.
Also, take the added step of presenting your portfolio in a professional looking binder that zips on three sides and has rings inside to hold your prints. These can be had in a variety of price ranges, so you should find one that fits your current budget and situation.
Remember that it is only through the proper presentation of your work that you are likely to garner a more far-reaching audience for it and thus have your photographs generating more income for you year after year.
