The editor of the Los Angeles Times, Russ Stanton has named former Business Editor, Davan Maharaj as the new managing editor.
Maharaj, who has been the business editor since early in 2007, will now assume responsibility for the National, Metro, Foreign, Sports and Business News departments.

He will also be responsible for deciding on coverage and leading those functional areas into the next several years in these admittedly turbulent times for the newspaper industry.

In the past, Maharaj has worked as a reporter on The Times in Orange County, Los Angeles and in East Africa. His six-part series "Living on Pennies," compiled in collaboration with the photographer Francine Orr, won the Ernie Pyle Award for Human Interest Writing in 2005.

Maharaj has also served as Assistant Foreign Editor and, in the Business News Department; he was a deputy editor before assuming overall leadership last year. During his tenure, the Business section was completely revamped in order to give greater emphasis in its coverage to consumer issues. The Sunday Section was also redesigned in order to focus more on personal finances.

A native of Trinidad, Maharaj earned a political science degree from the University of Tennessee, as well as a Master's in Law from Yale. Maharaj is famous among his colleagues as someone who is a passionate advocate for good stories, as well as for the people who work hard to produce them. This promotion should provide him with additional latitude to continue the work of making the Times a paper more in tune with the needs of its readers, and others whom it serves.
