The National Press Photographers Association has just announced the winners in their 2008 Best of Photojournalism contest. Top honors in the larger markets category went to John Moore of Getty Images. The larger markets category covers work done for publications whose circulations exceed 115,000.
Top honors went to Moore for his portfolio of work that included coverage of the assassination of former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto. Also included in the same portfolio was Moore's emotionally charged Memorial Day shot of Mary McHugh lying on top of the grave of her slain fiancé Sgt. James Regan at Arlington National Cemetery.
Moore has received many honors this year. He was also named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the University of Missouri, and he also walked away with two first place World Press Photo awards this year. Katz was also named newspaper photographer of the year for 2008.
Honorable mentions in the Photojournalist of the Year Category also went to the Dallas Morning News' Mona Reeder and Cheryl Diaz Meyer. Reeder also came in first in the Investigative Issue Picture Story category for her heartbreaking story of poverty in Texas.
In the Smaller Markets Category (publications with circulations below 115,000) Denny Simmons of the Evansville Courier & Press walked away with top honors for his extensive portfolio covering everything from a 5-year-old boy being rescued by firefighters from a burning house to the Indiana Golden Gloves competition.
It seemed that this year the NPPA judges seemed to favor images about war, violence, and social/economic hardship. Most of the winning entries in the other categories won for just these types of portfolios.
