Get Your Work Noticed – Enter a Photo Contest

Tuesday, April 1, 2008 @ 06:36

There are many budding photographers who create some awe-inspiring work, but in the clutter of so many others with equal talent, it is often hard to get one's work recognized in the marketplace. That's why many photography contests and exhibitions exist, for the purpose of finding new talent and recognizing the unknowns in the field.
These contests take many forms, and it is important to note that not all of them are totally legitimate. Some are thinly-disguised efforts to recruit new students for online photography courses and other such commercial ventures. Many, however, are sincere efforts to spotlight talented entrant's works.

Some of these contests involve an entry fee, though most don't. The themes of the contests are varied, from specific types of photographs such as landscape or portrait photography, to photography involving certain subjects, like baby or wedding photographs.

Some contests are sponsored by commercial industries seeking new material for their ad campaigns, such as vehicle photographs for Ford or pet photos for a dog food company. These last type of contests often provide the greatest benefit. Winners will often have their work featured in the national advertising campaigns of the sponsors, in many cases, can turn an unknown into a media star seemingly overnight.

Some of these contests are open to anybody with a desire to shoot good pictures, but others are more restrictive, such as being open only to youth or professionals who have had their work published in the past. Some contests are ongoing, while others have a specific deadline for works to be submitted.

For information on the contests running at any given point in time, as well as the specifications regarding their entry requirements, you can perform a simple Google search. The website I like for this is http://home.imageshack.com/blog/category/Photography/Contests since it compiles information from many contests, offering the opportunity to select from among the offerings best suited to my individual work.
