Digital or Film? Which Should I Use?

Many amateur photographers struggle with the question of whether they should focus on digital or film photography. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but is one clearly superior to the other?
Well, the simple answer is no. The bottom line is that both digital and film photography will give you quality images. So, the real difference between the two will be the question of which best fits your photographic style and budget.
Characteristics of Film Photography:
• Lower initial cost
• Better when working in black and white photography
• More forgiving, especially with regard to minor focusing issues and exposure problems
• Higher resolution
• Cameras are bulkier and heavier
• Film canisters can take up lots of extra space
• Film has to be developed and the images can only be viewed and edited after processing and after first scanning them into your computer.
Characteristics of Digital Photography:
• Higher initial cost
• Difficult to use when working with black and white photography
• Camera systems will almost always be lighter and easier to carry around
• At about a ten megapixel capacity, you have a high enough resolution to get very large prints of your photos
• Memory cards are small, cheap and generally hold quite a lot of photos
• Easy to edit images
• Images can be viewed immediately and thus poorly executed shots can be redone on the spot.
• You can save money on printing costs by only printing those images you need and / or want.
• Many digital cameras have built-in filters; one less thing you have to carry around in your camera bag.
