Achieving True Career Success in Photography – Finding Your Niche
Sunday, July 6, 2008 @ 16:30
The people who are truly successful in their careers are the ones who find a unique niche that they can call their own. This niche separates them from the crowd, and while admittedly their customer base may be small, that small pool of customers will belong to them and them alone.
Take for example Michael McGowan. Mike is a still and video photographer of some renown. He is also an accomplished skydiver. Put those two passions together and you have a niche that few people could fill.
Mike began skydiving in 1964, and married that skill with freefall photography in 1966. Since that time Mike's work has appeared in a host of skydiving and aviation publications, not to mention main stream newspapers and magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, USA Today, and the National Enquirer.
Mike also sells a collection of videos that have won him considerable renown both in skydiving circles as well as general entertainment. These include "On the Fun Side," and "Mike McGowan's Greatest Hits." That second, in particular enjoyed a wide distribution as the video features a host of skydiving "bloopers;" from "dumb things that skydiving students do," to major "oops" from some of the most experienced jumpers on the planet.

This is not to say anyone can achieve the level of expertise in his field that Mike has, but it certainly serves as an example that every photographer can find his unique niche in the field, and in the process achieve at least a moderate degree of career success that will be ongoing.
