The 2008 Pulitzer Prize Winners in the category of Breaking News Photography were just announced and Adrees Latif of the Reuters organization walked off with top honors for his photograph of a Japanese videographer fatally wounded during a street demonstration in Myanmar. The photograph captured the essence of the dangers of such a life, especially in countries torn apart by war or civil unrest.
The photo, showing the videographer sprawled across a pavement, fatally wounded was a shot that expressed the true dedication of a news photographer who will do almost anything to get that all-important shot, including give up his life when necessary.
Other finalists in the Breaking News Category were Mahmud Hams of Agence France-Presse for his stunning photo of a missile caught in its mid-air trajectory, as it falls on a target in the Gaza Strip. The photo also shows heartbreaking images of young Palestinians, some of them mere children, scrambling for safety amongst the carnage.
The amazing thing about this year's Pulitzer winners was that six prizes went to the Washington Post organization, including the highly-coveted Public Service prize for a series that paper ran on the poor treatment received by wounded veterans at the Walter Reed Hospital. Michel du Cille, a photographer, was among the team of journalists who worked on that story, along with reporters Dana Priest and Anne Hull.
The Pulitzer Prize is one of the most coveted awards in journalism today, and both reporters and journalists have considered receiving one of the prizes as the pinnacle of success in their chosen professions. The Pulitzer Prizes are given out every year, with categories open to both major and small markets alike.
